Partnerships that will all contribute to the region’s growth.

I am looking forward to being part of this process, and considering joining ITP NZ myself. When and how did you start?

Caron Proctor: I started in January 2016, just with an idea of how to be around really great people. I needed support, being lonely and isolated working from home. I just thought there has got to be other women that don’t want to network the old-fashioned way, that don’t want to swap a business card. So I just popped it on Facebook. I invited some contacts and clients, and that was it. Boom! 28 people showed up, and then the next month 40, 50, 60. Now we are at the highest point, 115!

B!Social: So let’s hear about how do you use Facebook in general as a tool to reach out to people, to these women, here in Nelson or let they be anywhere else in the world now?

Caron Proctor: I created a Facebook Page, initially a private Group Page just for the members, so the members felt safe. But then I realised what a silly thing that was, because it was a secret. What we are doing is so powerful and empowering that I was really keen to share it, and also get the women in Tribe to be able to share what they did. That was a real challenge!

So I started a public page - Your Tribe Nelson - and that grew quite a fast following of men and women all over the world. That happened quite quickly. This is where people can see what we are about, who are the members, what we are doing, what events we have.

The Facebook page of Your Tribe Nelson

B!Social: Tribe is organised around several key events, where the members have the possibility to meet and connect. These events can all be found on the Facebook page of Your Tribe Nelson, where you regularly post them. What are these meetings about?

Caron Proctor: To get the group together, we have big gatherings, twice a month at the moment, as it grew so big for the venue. That is for all the members, where they get some time to mix and mingle, sell a product, showcase something, and to be able to talk about their journey. We put the woman before the business; we are very mindful that it is not a business card swap.

We also have pow wows, which are mini intimate gatherings, with a little bit more business. One is going to be right here at the East Street Cafe in Nelson now, this is why we are here. We try to have those in a Tribe business as well - we are always giving and taking.

Tribe pow wow at East Street Nelson

And then we have events and education with the Tribe members. If we haven’t got a Tribe member who can give us what we need, then we bring someone in.

All the events are on there, and this is also where the public can comment and engage. We have just done a huge fundraiser for a Tribe member, too. It was particularly powerful because a large group of people came to the event who are not Tribe members. They also donated and showed up on the night and spent money, which was amazing.

B!Social: Yes, the Shine Your Light event, a fundraiser you put together with the help of Tribe members for Whole Lotta Life Foundation, a charity supporting young adults diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand. How many people attended the event?

Caron Proctor: I think around 120, and I would say about 30 non-Tribe members who are our followers on social media.

B!Social: How did you reach out on Facebook to get help from the members to organise this huge event?

Caron Proctor: In front of the group, and mainly on Facebook. The whole thing would not have happened without Facebook because it all started with a picture I put of a Tribe business to guess where we are having coffee… then I met Kristin Paterson [the Director of WLLF], and fell in love with what she was trying to do. So it all started then. Without social media, the event would not have been half as successful.

B!Social: Are you on other platforms as well?

Caron Proctor: Yes, we are on Instagram, I am not quite sure about Instagram yet, we have a lot to learn. We have almost 700 followers there, most of them are local or New Zealand businesses. That’s awesome because they are very engaged.

B!Social: How do people find you? Does it spread by word of mouth? Do you use any advertising as well? What is your experience?

Caron Proctor: I am keen to boost a post if it is good. We share a lot of information and we work very much on the philosophy of sharing information, not selling. We promote good stories, and if I see it is getting lots of reach, then I will put a boost on it. For the Shine Your Light event, we probably spent a few hundred dollars on boosting it with different things, making videos. It was an absolute success, and it is the easiest and cheapest form of marketing I have ever tried. It is also the easiest way for us to attract new members.

B!Social: What is your experience with the engagement? People engaging with the posts. Do they like to like your posts, or comment on them, share them? How has it been going over the time?

Caron Proctor: Yes, it is a good question because at first it was a bit challenging, especially for the Tribe members, as we had the group page and the public page. There was a lot of confusion which was which, and a lot of fear about liking things in public. But we changed that this year, and now we get a lot more comments and likes, lots more of sharing, like someone had a coffee with someone, or bought a hair product. It is growing and we want to carry on facilitating. So I try to lead that fiercely and quite clearly, this is where to go, this is what we are doing. Lots of education, and we have got still a long way to go.

But we are already successful so I just wonder where is it going when we grow into understanding what the possibilities are. I also think the group has changed. We have started to attract women who get it. Also the way we are refining, as I said to you earlier - we have been a lot clearer and stronger about our values and what we stand for. We cannot stand for everything and everyone.

B!Social: Well that is amazing. We wish you a lot of success, and thank you Caron for sharing your experience with us.

If you would like to follow Tribe on Facebook, click here.

How the power of Social Media helped spread the word of a charity, creating support and changing lives

http://www.bsocial.co.nz/blog/how-the-power-of-social-media-helped-spread-the-word-of-a-charity-creating-support-and-changing-lives

http://www.bsocial.co.nz/blog/how-the-power-of-social-media-helped-spread-the-word-of-a-charity-creating-support-and-changing-lives#comments

Facebook

find your voice

inspiration

Instagram

online support

power of social media

social media tips

Twitter

Group retreat with Whole Lotta Life Foundation in New Zealand. ©WLLF My first guest on the Blog is Kristin Paterson, Director of Whole Lotta Life Foundation. I am really excited to have you as my first guest on the blog. So please tell us, what does Social Media mean for you and Whole Lotta Life Foundation?

Kristin: Social Media has been vital for the Whole Lotta Life. When I started, I didn’t have any money, I couldn’t afford to get any marketing behind it. So I started with Facebook - first from my personal profile, then created a page. So much of the awareness raising that we have done has come through social media. It has been the most valuable tool in growing the charity. It has also been a lot of work, and a lot of learning.

Kristin Paterson, Director of Whole Lotta Life Foundation. ©K.Paterson

B!Social: Could you please tell us more about WLL?

Kristin: WLL was set up 4 years ago to provide support and community to young adults between the ages 20-45 diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand. When I was diagnosed, I only found a little community in the US called Stupid Cancer that provided me with support. As I was living in New Zealand, it was only computer based, but proved to be pretty invaluable.

B!Social: Why is Social Media such a powerful tool for WLL?

Kristin: It is invaluable to have online support, and helps hugely to eliminate those feelings of isolation. Sometimes when you are really sick, the only thing you can do is get from your bed to the couch. It is a great way to reach out, and it is important to connect with a community. Also the treatments are different overseas than in New Zealand, so I found it is good to reach out to others in the same country. This is why I created WLL, to make it easier for people to connect.

Also, when people feel well enough, they can bring these connections from the online world into the offline world. We organise retreats, regional meetups all around New Zealand where people can connect with each other and share their journey. So WLL is basically a catalyst, people find us online and then through us, they find each other.

The Facebook Page of Whole Lotta Life Foundation

B!Social: How do you find people, how do you reach your “target audience”?

Kristin: We definitely haven’t been able to use Facebook to it’s full potential. Since WLL launched 4 years ago, there has only ever been one or two people juggling the social media accounts while simultaneously wearing several other hats. We did some smaller marketing campaigns and ads that did bring results. Unfortunately we just don’t have money to put into Facebook advertising, but we would love to use it more in the future. So it has been all organic, and people find us through tagging other people. We started 4 years ago and now we have over 1000 followers.

B!Social: What is the big potential you see in Facebook and other social media?

Kristin: Our demographics is between 20-45 year old. Facebook is exactly their platform, they are there. Between the ages 25-45, there are twice as many women diagnosed with cancer as men, with the majority being breast cancer. Facebook and WLL line up really well in these terms. We are also on Twitter and Instagram but our followers are from much further afield than just NZ.

Also, we link now most of our events from our webpage to Facebook. All the information can be found on our website, but we announce them and link over to them from Facebook. It is easier to reach everyone like that.

The other thing I found very useful is using Messenger for our Regional NZ groups where we can send direct messages and communicate instantly with each participant. However, we are doing that with our personal profiles, not through the WLL page.

B!Social: Do you have any challenges?

Kristin: As the Charity grows, I feel the need to draw a line between “public figure” Kristin and “just me” Kristin who is working from her laptop in her PJs, who has 2 kids and a dog. Probably the best way for that will be to set up my own personal page.

Kristin and her dog :) ©K.Paterson

B!Social: Tell us more about the big event that is generating a lot of buzz and basically going viral on Facebook in the Nelson community right now.

Kristin: Yes, it is going to be a huge fundraiser and a real fun event organised in The Granary on the 30th of September. We are hoping to raise a lot of awareness to help support young adults with cancer and their families in New Zealand, get donations and also give everyone a special evening out with a lot of fun and entertainment! It’s first and foremost a wonderful opportunity for the Nelson Community to come together and support our work.

I am so delighted that Your Tribe, Nelson’s leading women’s networking collective took up the initiative, organise the event for us as it takes off a lot of weight off my shoulders. The event is everywhere on Facebook now, people like it, share it with their friends and networks, it definitely bought us more attention and I am sure it will get even bigger after the event. (You can find the details of the event here.)

B!Social: It sounds awesome, we will be there live at the event!
My last question to you is: what would be your advice or message to people and new businesses that are just about to start their social media presence?

Kristin: Remember, people have come to your page for a community and not to be sold to. It is important to build that community, and to develop a voice online. I see a lot of pages that just advertise at you. I am inclined to turn them off personally. Facebook is also more casual. I think we can really get the best response when we are ourselves and develop a voice rather than sounding like a “big organisation”.

B!Social: Thank you Kristin! :)

Shine your Light ~ Fundraiser event for Whole Lotta Life Foundation ~ organised by Your Tribe Nelson ©YTN

If you would like to follow Kristin and Whole Lotta Life Foundation’s story, hop over to their Facebook page and follow their updates.

If you would like to support the cause and make a donation, you can do it here.

If you would like to grab a ticket to the Nelson Fundraiser, click here before it sells out! :)

  shine your light

Please also feel free to share this post with anyone who you think might benefit from it.
